On August 31, 2024, the Valleywood Golf Course in Apple Valley, Minnesota, came alive with competitive energy as golfers from the African and immigrant communities gathered for the 3rd annual Beyond Season Golf Tournament.
Presented by Haven Residential Homes and powered by Beyond Media Solutions, the event blended athletic competition, community engagement, and philanthropy.
The tournament catered to all skill levels, with exciting categories and competitions. A standout moment of the day was the beginner’s golf clinic, which introduced new players to the sport, and the lively putting contests that added fun for participants and spectators.
John Saina once again defended his title in Men’s Group A (handicap 0-9), shooting an impressive gross score of 72 off a 2-handicap. His performance earned him the overall gross winner title along with a $500 cash prize. He also claimed the Longest Drive and the Men’s Group A net score prizes. Tony Muindi followed closely with a gross score of 79 (handicap 8), but Saina’s dominance on the course prevailed. Muindi received a trophy and a $300 cash prize.
In Men’s Group B (handicap 10-18), Edwin Migiro emerged victorious with a net score of 72 off handicap 10, while Melvin Moore finished with a net score of 74 off handicap 15.
In Men’s Group C (handicap 19-28), Ernest Kofi Hinson clinched victory with a net score of 73, followed by Cyrus Wilson, who carded a net score of 74.
Shiko Nyoike stole the show in the Women’s Open, winning with a net score of 86 off a handicap of 35, marking her as the standout in the Women’s Open category.
Additionally, the Closest to the Pin prize went to Emmanuel Sackey, while Matt Atana claimed the Longest Putt award after sinking an impressive 23-foot putt on hole 18.
Beyond the competition, the event had a philanthropic mission, with funds raised supporting Circle of Life, a charity dedicated to providing sanitary pads to girls in Ghana and other African regions. The combination of golf and giving brought a heartwarming depth to the day, as participants knew they were contributing to a greater cause.
The day also featured a musical performance by Carolyne Naomi and live abstract art by Nailah Ali, adding cultural flair to an already vibrant event.
Collins Oppong, the Director of the Beyond Season Golf Tournament, noted, “Beyond trophies and cash prizes, the tournament left an indelible mark by fostering camaraderie, inclusivity, and the spirit of giving back.”
Partners of the event included First Timers Golf, Arise Homecare Services, Minneapolis Health Clinic. The rest were Thriving Mother-Daughter, Associated Bank, Pama Logistics, JemCare, and Players Health.
