Charles Amartey Sorgbodjor topped the Group A category at the Centre of the World Golf Club Captain’s Prize 2026, as amateur golfers took centre stage in one of the club’s major competitions of the year in Tema on Saturday, 22 August.
The annual Captain’s Prize brought together a broad field of amateur golfers, alongside professionals, ladies and seniors, for a Stableford competition at the Centre of the World Golf Club.
Despite some showers in the morning, conditions improved as the day progressed, allowing the competition to proceed successfully.
Sorgbodjor leads Group A
In Group A, for golfers with Handicap Indexes from 5.5 to 12.4, Charles Amartey Sorgbodjor led the category with 34 points.
The contest behind him was particularly tight.
George Wisbon Mensah, Dennis Etwi-Barimah and Isaac Amoako Mensah all returned 33 points, while Eric Ofosu-Hene, Prince Adukwaw and Edwin Osei-Kuffour followed with 32 points each.
The close scoring reflected the competitive nature of the amateur field, with only two points separating Sorgbodjor from a group of players immediately behind the leading positions.
Abban leads Scratch field
The Scratch category also produced some of the strongest scoring of the tournament.
Desmond Abban finished with 38 points to lead the category, narrowly ahead of Michael Nyarko, who returned 37 points.
Gabriel Obodai followed with 36 points, while Jibril Kasim recorded 32 and Eric Amartey finished on 29.
Professional honours
The professionals competed in a separate category, where Prince Agyiri emerged as the winner following a remarkably close finish.
Agyiri returned a score of 71, with Francis Torgah, Augustine Manasseh and Kwame Ligbidi also finishing on 71.
With all four players recording the same score, there was little separating the leading professionals on the day.
Agyiri’s victory gave him the professional category honours, separate from the amateur competition for the Captain’s Prize.
Koume takes ladies’ honours
In the ladies’ competition, Vivian Koume took first place with a score of 83.
Mercy Werker finished one shot behind on 84, while Grace Komladzei and Jessica Teli both returned 87.
The Ladies’ Seniors category produced another close finish.
Maggi Owusu-Baah and Helen Appah both recorded 27 points, with Owusu-Baah taking first place and Appah finishing second. Mona Captain placed third with 24 points.
Golf and tradition in Tema
The Captain’s Prize programme extended beyond the main competition, with longest drive and closest-to-the-pin contests forming part of the day’s activities.
There was also a strong local flavour away from the course, with the Efadzina Borborbor Group providing traditional entertainment as golfers and guests gathered following the competition.
Music, networking and refreshments added to the social side of an event that remains an important fixture on the Centre of the World Golf Club calendar.
The 2026 Captain’s Prize ultimately delivered competition across the different levels of the club game, with the amateurs at the heart of the tournament and professionals, ladies and seniors adding further depth to a full day of golf in Tema.
