Golfers thrill, compete, network at South African Freedom Day tournament

Amateur golfers from both the Ghanaian and South African Communities in Ghana, gathered at the Celebrity Golf Club in Sakumono on Saturday April 28th to compete on the greens in an atmosphere enveloped with well wishes, friendliness and business networking.

The fifth tournament since its inception to celebrate the 24th Anniversary of South African Freedom Day, was seamlessly organized by the Global Media Alliance and Ghana-South Africa Business Chamber with generous sponsorship from MTN.

When it mattered most, Floria Hurtubise, returned a combined 40 points off handicap 13 to emerge winner in the Ladies Group A division. Floria topped a fairly packed field after she posted a medley of bogeys, pars and one birdie on her last hole.

The Bogoso resident explained that she managed her game by keeping it straight on the fairway to stay in contention for the ultimate prize of a trophy and a hamper from the sponsors.

Leticia Amponsah-Mensa occupied the second place with a total of 36 points in the Ladies Group A category followed by Catherine Fabbi who finished in third place with 36 points. They were separated on countback.

In the Ladies Group B, Maureen Akuaku captured the first spot with a total of 39 points. She was followed in second place by Agnes Adams who returned 34 points. Angela Ayanful finished third on 32 points.

In the Men Group A , Reindolf Amankwah from Damang Golf Course, turned a disappointing first three holes into a streak of exciting mix of two birdies, 12 pars and 2 bogeys to finish atop with a total 40 points off handicap 8.

The old caddy calmly delivered amid a seemingly tough field to take home a trophy and hampers from the sponsors in the one-day tournament. He was followed in second place by Anthony Appiah who amassed 35 points to beat into third position G. Teye Lartey who totaled 34 points.

Daniel Addo took charge in the Men Group B to close with 41 points. Mathias Dorfe returned 38 points to take second position on countback ahead of E.K. Asare who finished third also with 38points.

All winners took home trophies and varieties of hampers.

Chief Executive Officer of Global Media Alliance (GMA) Mr Ernest Boateng, thanked the headline sponsors, MTN for their immense generosity as well as Oak Plaza Hotels, Distell Ghana and Awake Purified Drinking Water.
