Sport Director of the World MiniGolf Sport Federation, Mr. Pasi Aho has called for the need to build new MiniGolf courses and make it more accessible to the wider population.
Pasi made this known in an interview with TheGolfer Online; Ghana’s specialist golf website during the maiden Coca-Cola Open African MiniGolf Championship in Accra, Ghana.
“Our dream now is to market MiniGolf , to commercialize it and to build new courses which are necessary step to make MiniGolf not just a sport but a game or hobby wider and known in the country.” He said.
The championship generally lived up to the hype that preceded the event; it produced four champions that will compete in Las Vegas for the 100 World MiniGolfers Championship.
These champions are Kelvin Boateng from Ghana, Aboubacar Kourouma from Guinea, Gladys Kpatchi from Togo and Alice Kobisch from Germany.
Pasi is impressed with the general player quality for the African Open Championship and believes that players like Kelvin Boateng did amazing and has a better chance to compete on the same level as most Europeans.
After staging a successful championship in Ghana, the World MiniGolf Sport Federation is poised to organize the Individual Championship next year and follow it with the Team Championship in the following year.
The Sport Director praised the ingenuity of the local organizers for the quality of work they put into the tournament. According to him, the team adjusted efficiently to learn how tournaments of such nature are executed and the hundreds of intricate details to take into consideration.
In all, Pasi believes the local team did a good job; therefore, they would asseess summary of the overall performance to figure out the areas that need improvement.
Pasi Aho also expressed immense appreciation to the sponsors for the huge financial sacrifices they made towards the championship and for helping to create a festival atmosphere within the arena.
The Ghana MiniGolf Federation and Coca Cola sponsored the championship with generous support from MTN, Telefonika and the Major Series of Putting (MSOP) U.S.A.
The World Minigolf Sport Federation (WMF) is the umbrella organization of 63 MiniGolf sports associations worldwide with Continental Associations in Africa, America, Asia, Europe and Oceania. Over 1,000 championships courses are approved for official competitions and over 1,500 international MiniGolf tournaments are held each year.
