PaySwitch AGC Matchplay Kicks Off

The May Day holiday at Achimota Golf Club, saw the return of the Club Match Play with the launch of the PaySwitch Achimota Club Match Play 2018.

64 Club Members assembled on the 1st May 2018 for a singles Club Matchplay tournament. The tournament is sponsored by PaySwitch Ltd. and will be played in 6 stages ending with a Quarter-Final, Semi-Final and then final in July to crown the PaySwitch Matchplay Champion.

The first round of the Matchplay tournament, saw 32 golfers of Achimota Golf Club emerge as winners to qualify for the second round to be played between 5th & 18th May. The CEO of PaySwitch, Kojo Choi who is an executive on the Achimota Golf Club Council and the sponsor of the Matchplay series, was knocked out on the 18th hole in the first round by Mr. Alistair Rushton of the British High Commission. When asked about his game, Mr. Choi reported that he played well but lost to a worthy opponent.

Other notable exits from the first round of the tournament were the Vice Captain, Mr. Sjoerd Grueter. The Past Captain Dr. Frank Adu – MD of CalBank – who was in the final of the 2016 edition. Also knocked out in the first round, was the 2016 Champion and Past Captain Mr. René Gamali Kwame. The Club’s indefatigable Competition Secretary Mr. George Y. Amoah who also participated fell to Mr. Kwaku Ofosuhene.

The Club Captain Mr. Mark Cofie Jnr triumphed over Mr. Henry Kerali the World Bank Country Director for Ghana to proceed to the next round.

The Club President Mr. Eddie Addo made light work of his match against Mr. Ofori Boateng. Some of the other Members that qualified to the next round include Mr. Michael Obeng, Mrs. Ama Morgan, Mr. Kwaku Ofosuhene, Geoff Grant and Mr. Mike Aggrey, the president of the GGA and Past Captain of the club.

Mr. Yaw Yeboah was given a walk over by his opponent Mr. Isaac Asante. At the starting hole, Mr. Yeboah was disappointed that he did not have a chance to settle an old score with his golfing buddy Mr. Asante, but he was confident that he was going to progress to the final.
