The Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC) in partnership with the Tema Country Golf Club launched the second edition of the Centre of the World Golf Tournament ( Year of Return edition) at an impressive ceremony at the Club on Tuesday July 2.
This year’s tournament follows a successful debut last year and it comes off on Saturday, July 13, 2019 at the Tema Country Golf Club.
In the last year event, over one hundred golfers worked the greens for a chance to clinch the ultimate trophies. Winners received several sizzling trophies and goodies from the sponsors.
In similar fashion, this year’s tournament forms part of activities being put together by the GTDC in marking 2019 as the Year of Return campaign. Golfers from across the globe will take part in the event which tees off from the Center of the Earth.
This is in recognition of the Greenwich Meridian accolade and pride that Ghana has over the years been touted with.
During the press launch on Tuesday, Deputy CEO of GTDC, Akorfa Dokosi, among other things said, “This tournament seeks to project Ghana to the world. We want to translate this information about the Center of the World which is in Ghana into tangible monuments like the Cruise Terminal at the Tema Harbor and factor the Tema Presbyterian Church into our plans.”
She continued, saying, “This year’s tournament promises to be more competitive and we welcome golfers, sponsors and Ghanaians in the diaspora to join along because there are lots of prizes to be won,” she concluded.
Captain of the Tema Country Golf Club, Nana Dr. Ani Agyei III, Krobohene and Twafohene of Tutu Akuapem on his part, reiterated the club’s preparedness to host the rest of the World at their golf course.
He intimated that the club was founded shortly after the country gained its independence in 1957. He therefore considered the club and its members lucky and blessed to have the Meridian pass through their course.
“I hope this will go a long way to encourage investors and tourists to come and see where the Center of the World is and play on our course.” He noted with excitement.
