TEMA, Ghana: Tema golfers secured a convincing 33–22 victory over their counterparts from Ikeja Golf Club of Nigeria in the latest instalment of a cross-border rivalry that has developed into one of the more enduring relationships between the two West African golf clubs.

The international match play brought the Ghanaian and Nigerian sides together in Tema, with the home team establishing control of the contest and ultimately completing an 11-point victory.

The fixture was about more than the final score.

Tema and Ikeja have maintained a golfing relationship stretching back well over a decade, using reciprocal competitions to combine competitive golf with the social traditions that remain an important part of the sport at club level.

That history gave the latest meeting an added edge.

Ikeja Golf Club had already placed the Tema encounter prominently on its 2026 calendar. Earlier in the year, Ikeja captain Segun Odunuga confirmed that his club would travel to Ghana for an away match play after hosting the Tema contingent in Nigeria the previous year.

On the course, however, it was Tema who made home advantage count.

The Ghanaian side accumulated 33 points against Ikeja’s 22, producing a strong team performance to take the honours and reinforce Tema’s record in the inter-club series.

The result continues a pattern of closely followed encounters between the two clubs. Tema recorded a 30–21 victory over Ikeja in an international match in 2010 and followed that with another home victory, 36–19, in 2017.

Yet the longevity of the fixture may ultimately be more significant than any individual result.

At a time when African golf continues to seek stronger competition, greater visibility and deeper regional connections, exchanges such as Tema-Ikeja provide an established platform for golfers from neighbouring countries to compete without losing the camaraderie associated with the amateur game.

For Tema, the 33–22 scoreline provides another home victory to celebrate.

For Ikeja, attention will inevitably turn to the next opportunity to reverse the result.

And for both clubs, the enduring Ghana-Nigeria rivalry has another chapter.
