The African Tour unveiled its plan to establish a golf academy in Imo State. The Tour disclosed this during a Press briefing at the Arsenal Golf Club in Owerri today ahead of its tournament tagged “South-East Shoot Out” scheduled to hold from 12-15 of June 2019.
The poor state of the game of golf in Nigeria most especially in the South-Eastern part of the country, is why the tour dimmed it fit, that there is a need to groom the younger generations into the game.
“It’s sad that our government here does not promote and invest in this sport that can help boost its economy and create jobs and also serve as a source of income to the youths of this nation”.
” One good thing about our academy is that it’s going to be absolutely free’ and we are establishing the golf Academy for our prospective students without them paying any penny to learn and play the game. All they have to do is find their way down to the Arsenal Golf course here in Owerri, Feeding is also guaranteed for the Academy players ”. The AfricanTour said.
The tour players while also briefing the press had this to say;
Vincent Torgah is a four times winner on the African tour this season and also the Winner of the 2019 Lebreville Open held last week in Gabon. Vincent shared his views on what sport he would have played aside golf.
“Well, I use to play football but since I knew this game I have never regretted taking up the game as a profession”
Q: What are your expectations going into this week’s event?
A: “Well I just need to follow my game plan and if it works out well, that’s the game of golf for you” Vincent said.
Q: This is a new game format should we expect any new game plan?
A: “Well I think the answer to that is that I just need to stick to my game plan we will get it sorted out there on the field” Mike Ubi said while answering a question been directed to him.
The tournament which is a new format of play in golf will only have players who make the cut after the first two rounds advance to the 9 hole stroke play match on Friday, amongst which eight players will also advance to the Quarter finals while four players will advance to the semi-finals.
The final two players will then proceed to the finals. One of the differences between this format and the Matchplay format is that every shot counts and every player must hole out on every hole.
