Friday, April 27th, brought warm sunshine and awesome turnout for a free Golf Taster Session organized at the Achimota Golf Academy for some 30 staffs of CalBank, a private banking institution in Ghana. The session was the second to be organized for the bank, after its debut in the programme in 2016 with over 50 staff.
The free Golf Taster Sessions form part of programmes that the Achimota Golf Club is organizing at the academy to provide interested participants a hands-on, feel-and-touch golf programme. According to Captain of the club, Mr. Mark Cofie Jnr, “These two-hour structure programmes are designed to give an overview of the game, the tenets of the sport and an opportunity to judge for oneself, the exciting opportunities the game of golf provides.”
CalBank, reputed as a responsive and affable bank, has taken advantage of the session to introduce golf to its staff as a tool to promote business, health and social benefits, as well as corporate interactions in general. It’s the belief of Mr. Frank Adu, Managing Director of the bank that such viable initiatives will promote good health among the staff of the bank.
The participants at the taster session are expected to enroll in the academy programme and eventually integrate into the club’s playing and social life. This forms part of the bank’s commitment to its staff and the development of golf in Ghana.
Speaking to the participants after the session, Mr. Cofie Jnr, reminded the participants that the session was just to offer them a ‘taste’ of what golf is about and what it entails. This he said, “will give you the opportunity to try and see if this was something you would like to take up.” He reiterated.
He shared his experience on his first session in the early 90s where, he hit medley of air shots, but just one “sweet shot” was enough to bring him back to the game.
Recounting his first taster experience, Najib, a staff of the bank confided that the training by coach Quinton and the speech by the captain of the club during the session have triggered his interest and confidence in the game. “I am more confident at the driving range and I feel at ease within the golf club.” He said.
On her part, Mrs. Niine Inkumsah Sarpong, a Recruitment, Learning and Development Manager at CalBank, observed that until the session, most of her colleagues were skeptics of golf and what it does. “Most of them thought golf was all about hitting a small ball and walking leisurely after it” adding that, “their taster session gave them some form of introduction to what golf was about and they can’t wait to start the actual learning.”
Niine was a participant in the maiden Taster Session in 2016 and has since become a golfer; a decision she describes as refreshing and life changing.
The Taster Session at the Achimota Golf Academy is open to groups of five or more and provides exciting, fun and can’t-wait-to continue approach to encountering the game. Corporate groups, schools, associations and other groups who want to take advantage of this exclusive opportunity can reach the Club’s Hotline on +233 54 410 0052 for further enquiries and registration.
