Three decades after its first tee shot, the MTN Anniversary Invitational returned to the fairways on Saturday with a field that delivered precisely the drama that has come to define it: razor-thin margins, breakout rounds, and one performance that will be talked about for years.
That performance belonged to Frederick Semenu Duvor who took the Men’s Group A honours on 39 points, but the margin at the top was wafer-thin — Isaac Asante and Kwame Boatfo finished level on 37 in a share of second, with Michael Agyer (35) and Michael Gosney (34) close enough behind to keep the pressure on to the final green. In the Ladies’ Group A, Julienne Afri Amzado matched Duvor’s winning mark with 39 points of her own, leaving Princess Nkrumah-Boadu and Mary Agyeman Prempeh inseparable in second on 35.
If Group A was about nerve, Group B was about one man’s mastery! Yaw Mireku Jnr., who carded an extraordinary 45 Stableford points claimed Men’s Group B. It was a round of rare authority.
Behind him, the chase was always a step too late. Frederick Andre Feraille played a fine round of his own and still finished second on 41, the only other man in the group to break 40. Nathan Lee-Williams Annobi and David Boakye then finished locked on 39 in a share of third, with Michael Darko completing the top five on 38 — a scoreline that would win most groups on most days, and still left him fifth.
